About Block Cinema

From its origins as a repertory film screening series, Block Museum’s “Block Cinema” program has evolved into a dynamic and essential platform for dialogue, exploration, and learning through media arts at Northwestern University. The program re-envisions film exhibition as an imaginative site for scholarship, pedagogy, public dialogue, and community building, serving as a unique University resource and a model amongst cinema programs in higher education.

The Block Cinema program prioritizes perspectives and filmmakers that are often inaccessible in mainstream cinema and screen culture. Recent screening themes have addressed topics such as climate change, mass migration, Indigenous rights, and the visibility of gender-diverse filmmakers. By showcasing films that challenge conventional narratives and styles, paired with rich post-film discussions with filmmakers and scholars, Block Cinema creates opportunities for critical thinking and community engagement both on campus and beyond.

In addition to its work as a free, independent screening venue, Block Cinema forges unique academic collaborations with faculty and partners across campus. Block Cinema’s curators support academic research, offering expertise on contemporary media art to scholars at the cutting edge of research into sustainability, mental health, and other interdisciplinary fields. The program brings vital technical resources to media makers on campus and fosters professional development opportunities for students. As a vital platform for connecting scholarship to public audiences, Block Cinema amplifies Northwestern's global profile through unique screenings, workshops, preservation initiatives, and publications that bridge the gap between academic inquiry and public discourse.

Block Cinema’s impact is felt across Northwestern and the surrounding community, offering a space where students, faculty, and local residents can gather to experience film as a tool for learning and cultural connection. Block Cinema serves as a center for media arts presentation and pedagogy for the entirety of Northwestern, supporting the University's commitment to fostering interdisciplinary innovation.
