From vast desert vistas and mountain ranges to microscopic crystalline structures, the films in this screening bring viewers closer to the elemental conditions of life on Earth through the masterful use of cinema’s most fundamental elements. In Night Noon and Slow Shift, experimental filmmaker Shambhavi Kaul explores uncanny landscapes from Death Valley to the Sonoran Desert to India’s Hampi ruins, bringing a quizzical lens to mediated encounters between animal, geological, architectural forms. Last Things, Deborah Stratman’s magisterial sci-fi essay film, flows across vast time scales to contemplate the origins of matter and the universe’s cataclysmic end. Fusing microphotography, anaglyph 3D, computer-rendered models and richly textured 16mm photography with exquisite sound design, Stratman vividly deploys every facet of cinematic artifice to render nature in all its fascination and perplexity.
Total runtime: approx. 70 min
