Join us this Spring when two of our most popular annual events return. Up first, on May 9th, is Sonic Celluloid, an event which pairs rock musicians with silent and experimental films. On June 13th, Dave Filipi returns to present this year's program of Rare Baseball Films culled from the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Both events are one-night-only, so don't miss out!
Sonic Celluloid

Sonic Celluloid is a collaboration between WNUR, Northwestern's student-run, non-commercial radio station (89.3 FM), and Block Cinema. Now in its twelfth year, Sonic Celluloid is a special event that features musicians performing live with their own original compositions or improvised scores to silent and experimental films of their choosing. Performers this year include Mark McGuire, Kwaidan, and Vertonen. Approximate running time is 2 hours. It will be loud! Special thanks to Gillian Levy, Jenna Powell-Malloy, Harlynn Siler and Ethan David Simonoff of WNUR for organizing.

Mike Nichols’ anti-establishment classic still resonates nearly 50 years later, partly because its social critique comes from within the world of privilege and conformity, rather than the radical fringe. Dustin Hoffman gives a star-making performance as Benjamin Braddock, a young college grad beset by apathy and a lack of direction. He begins an affair with the older Mrs. Robinson, played by the remarkable Anne Bancroft, who steals the film. The film’s deadpan-humor and scathing look at mid-century moral emptiness is given ironic counterpoint by Simon and Garfunkel’s buoyant soundtrack.
Rare Baseball Films: The Newsreels

For the tenth year in a row, and with the baseball season in full swing, we’re celebrating our national pastime with another edition of Rare Baseball Films, organized by curator Dave Filipi. This year the program draws again from newsreels of the Hearst Metrotone News Collection at the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Come out and see such greats as Babe Ruth, Sandy Koufax, and Willie Mays, as well as a fire at Fenway Park, footage from the 1919 Black Sox World Series, a 1938 victory parade for the Cubs, and games played between Hollywood celebrities, mothers and sons, on an aircraft carrier, in Sing Sing prison, and more! Special thanks to the UCLA Film & Television Archive for its assistance with this program. Tickets for this screening are very limited and are available at the door only. Box office opens at 6pm. We advise patrons to arrive at least one hour early to ensure seating.
