Ellen Philips Katz and Howard C. Katz Classroom for Art Object Study
A teaching space for class visits with the collection
The Ellen Philips Katz and Howard C. Katz Classroom for Art Object Study is a dedicated teaching space within The Block Museum for group learning and course-based engagement with works of art from the museum’s collection. The classroom provides an intimate setting for close looking, discussion, and collaborative exploration of original works of art.
Appointments are available for Northwestern University classes and groups by request. Faculty may integrate artworks from the collection into their courses, supported by Block staff in selecting and preparing materials to meet specific curricular goals.
- The classroom can accommodate up to 20 visitors at a time. Larger groups can be divided into smaller sections.
- Block staff is available to advise on selecting works based on curricular goals.
- Inquiries about scheduling group visits to the classroom may be directed to block_classroom@northwestern.edu.

Teaching at The Block: Academic Year 2026–2027
During the 2026–2027 academic year, The Block will be conducting a search for a new Academic Programming team member. As a result, our capacity to host class visits in the Katz Classroom will be temporarily reduced in the 2026–2027 academic year.
Reservations for Katz Classroom sessions will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis. If you plan to include a classroom visit in your syllabus, we encourage you to contact us as early as possible. Our ability to accommodate last-minute requests will be very limited during this transition.
Please send Katz Classroom inquiries to block_classroom@northwestern.edu.
Our capacity to host class visits in the museum's exhibitions will not be affected. Faculty interested in teaching in the galleries should continue to contact blockengagement@northwestern.edu to schedule visits.
